    Downspout Rerouting Houston, TX

Send Roof Water Away from the Foundation

Downspout rerouting in Houston fixes the most common drainage mistake we see: a perfectly good gutter that empties every gallon of roof water into a two-foot circle next to your foundation. Texas Urban Elements moves, extends, and buries downspout lines so that water leaves the slab edge and travels to a place where it can drain away.

Around most Houston houses, the soil is that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. A downspout that soaks one corner of the slab during every storm, while the rest of the perimeter stays dry, sets up the uneven movement that shows up later as cracked brick, sticking doors, and gaps at the baseboards.

    Signs Your Downspouts Need Rerouting

Any one of these means roof water is landing where it does the most harm. The fix is usually not a new gutter. It is a better path from the bottom of the downspout to the edge of your property.

    • A downspout ends in a short elbow or a splash block within a foot or two of the wall
    • and soil wash out of the bed below the downspout after every rain
    • Water ponds along the slab, in a side yard, or at the back door
    • Flexible extensions get kicked aside by the lawn crew and never put back
    • A downspout dumps across a driveway or walk that stays slick with algae
    • An old underground line backs up and overflows at the downspout during storms

How Downspout Rerouting Works on Houston Clay

Rerouting can be as simple as moving a downspout to a corner where the ground falls away, or as involved as a buried line running across the backyard. The goal is the same either way: get water well past the foundation, onto ground that keeps falling, or into pipe that carries it to an outlet.

Underground lines use solid pipe, never perforated. We prefer smooth wall PVC such as SDR-35 or Schedule 40 over corrugated black pipe, because smooth pipe flows faster, resists crushing, and can be cleaned with a jetter. The pipe is laid with continuous fall toward the outlet so water and silt never sit in a belly.

At the end of the line, water comes back to the surface through an NDS pop-up emitter in the lawn, drops into a tied into a larger system, or exits at the curb where the city and your HOA allow it. On flat Houston lots, finding enough fall is the hard part, which is why we check elevations instead of eyeballing them.

    Our Downspout Rerouting Process

Most rerouting jobs take a day or two, and the steps below are the same whether we are moving one downspout or tying in every corner of the house.

    1. Walk the property with a Home Scout, ideally after rain or with a hose test, to see where each downspout's water actually goes.
    2. Shoot grades from each downspout to possible outlet points so every line has continuous fall.
    3. Call 811 for utility locates before any digging, and mark irrigation lines along the route.
    4. Trench, bed the pipe, and connect the downspout with an adapter and a cleanout so the line can be serviced later.
    5. Install the pop-up emitter, catch basin, or curb outlet at the discharge end.
    6. Backfill, restore the sod or bed, and water test each line until it runs clean at the outlet.

    Downspout Rerouting Materials and Options

Above-ground options include a downspout relocated to a better corner, a longer leader bent along the wall, or a hinged extension that lifts out of the way for mowing. These work when the ground already slopes away and the is lawn that can absorb the water.

Buried options are cleaner and more permanent. A 4-inch solid line ends in a pop-up emitter that sits flush with the St. Augustine until water pushes the lid open. Where several downspouts are close together, we can collect them into a single larger line. Where the yard has no low point at all, the line can run to the street or into catch basin installation at a planned collection point.

Downspout Rerouting Cost Factors in Houston

Cost follows the length of each line and what is in the way. A short run across open lawn is quick. A long run that crosses a sidewalk, passes under a driveway, weaves around live oak roots, or has to reach the curb takes more labor, and sometimes a bore instead of an open trench.

Other factors are the number of downspouts, whether existing underground lines need to be dug up first, sod and bed restoration, and city or HOA rules for curb outlets. Check the ballpark price tool for a range before we visit.

    06

Mistakes We Fix on Existing Downspout Lines

The most common failure is corrugated pipe laid without real fall. It sags into bellies, holds water and silt, and eventually crushes or fills with roots. The downspout then backs up during a storm and spills at the house, which is worse than having no line at all.

We also dig up downspouts tied into perforated pipe, lines that end in the middle of a flower bed with nowhere to go, and pop-up emitters set in the lowest part of the yard where the water just pools back toward the slab. Some lines were never connected to anything and simply end in a buried pocket of gravel.

    Pairs Well With Downspout Rerouting

If the gutters themselves overflow or leak, rerouting the downspouts only fixes half the problem. Pair it with gutter replacement and you deal with both ends at once. For yards that still hold water after the downspouts are moved, yard drainage solutions cover the rest of the lot.

    Downspout Rerouting Questions

How far should a downspout drain from the foundation?

Farther than most people think. A splash block at the wall is not enough on Houston clay. Common guidance is several feet at minimum, and farther where the ground is flat. The better answer is to discharge where the ground keeps falling away from the house, or into solid pipe that carries the water to an emitter or curb outlet.

Can downspouts drain to the street in Houston?

In many neighborhoods, yes, through a curb outlet or by daylighting the pipe at the street edge. Rules vary by city and HOA, and Houston, Bellaire, and West University Place each have their own requirements. We check what applies to your address before we design the line so the outlet does not have to be redone.

    What is a pop-up emitter?

It is a fitting at the end of a buried downspout line that sits flush with the lawn. When water fills the pipe, pressure lifts the lid and the water spreads across the surface. When the flow stops, the lid drops back down. It keeps the yard clean and mower friendly while getting water far from the slab.

Why does my underground downspout overflow at the house?

Usually the line is clogged, crushed, or has a belly that fills with silt. Corrugated pipe is the common culprit, and sometimes the outlet is buried under sod. We can test the line with a hose, clear it if it is sound, or replace it with smooth wall pipe laid with proper fall if it is not.

Will rerouting downspouts tear up my yard?

Not much. Most lines need a narrow trench, and we cut and set aside sod so it can go back in place. Beds are restored after backfill. Where a line has to cross a driveway or sidewalk, we can often bore under it instead of breaking concrete, so the visible disruption is limited to a few days.
