Surface damage has different causes. Broken edges usually mean the slab was too thin at the edge or had no steel there.

Matching the repair to the cause is the whole job. A crack sealed over an active void will reopen. A panel replaced without fixing the downspout that washed out its base will settle again.

Drilling and epoxying steel dowels into the old concrete keeps the new section level with its neighbors. Matching new concrete to old is never perfect, but a matching broom texture and a cleaning or sealing of the whole surface narrows the difference.
